This will be the first in a series of posts where I'll take a look back at a year based on my movie lists. In this case, however, I didn't keep a list in 2007, so I made my top 10 list by looking over a list of movies released in 2007 and skimming through the 2007 SIFF schedule online. Unfortunately, this means that there is a chance I've forgotten a gem I saw at SIFF or early in 2007. In separate posts, I'll review each of the movies in my top 10 as well as the "just missed the list" movies.
In the past, I also sent out a bottom 10 movies every year, but I decided not to do that. As the years went by, I got better at filtering the movies I saw, so I saw far fewer that I hated, and most of the bottom ten were really obscure misses from SIFF, so I won't be doing any bottom 10 lists anymore.
One slightly strange thing about my lists is that I've always found it easier to base the list on when I saw the movie rather than its official release date, thus you'll see some movies on my 2007 list that were already up for the Oscars mixed with movies that are up for this year's Oscars.
2007 Stats:
Total Movies Seen: Unknown, I would guess around 60
Movies Seen at SIFF: Unknown, I would guess around 20. I definitely had a good SIFF in 2007, seeing three movies in my top 10 ("Knocked Up," "Once," and "The King of Kong") as well as 3 movies that almost made my top 10.
My Top Ten Movies of 2007:
1. No Country for Old Men
2. Letters from Iwo Jima
3. Superbad
4. Once
5. Knocked Up
6. Children of Men
7. Michael Clayton
8. Gone Baby Gone
9. Waitress
10. The King of Kong
The three movies (in no particular order) that just missed my top 10 from SIFF were:
Vitus
In the Shadow of the Moon
The Singer
After reviewing the Oscar list for 2007, I realized that I missed another gem from 2007 that just barely misses my top 10: "Little Children."
